No heat? Check these first
Some heating problems have a simple cause. These checks are safe for anyone to do. If they do not bring the heat back, call us.

If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm goes off
Skip the checks. Leave the house first, then call your gas company or 911 from outside. Do not switch lights or appliances on or off on the way out.
Quick checks
Thermostat
Make sure it is set to Heat and to a temperature above the room's. If the screen is blank, replace the batteries.
Breaker
In the electrical panel, look for a tripped breaker for the furnace, boiler or heat pump. Switch it fully off and back on once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.
Furnace switch
Most furnaces and boilers have a switch that looks like a light switch on or near the unit. Make sure it is on.
Filter
A clogged filter can make a furnace shut itself off. If the filter is dirty, replace it.
Furnace door
Many furnaces will not run unless the front panel is closed tight. Check that it is fully in place.
Outside
Clear snow and ice from around a heat pump's outdoor unit, and from any vent pipes on the outside wall.
Leave the rest to us. Do not take the furnace or boiler apart, or try to relight a pilot if you are not sure how.
