Signs your air conditioner needs a repair

A struggling air conditioner usually gives some warning. Turning it off and calling early can keep a small problem from damaging the compressor, the most expensive part to replace.

  • It runs, but the air from the vents is warm or barely cool
  • Airflow from the vents is weak
  • Water around the indoor unit or dripping from the ceiling
  • Ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil
  • The outdoor unit hums but its fan does not spin
  • It turns on and off every few minutes
  • The house feels damp and sticky even with the AC running

What usually goes wrong

These are the causes we find most often.

  • Dirty filter or coil

Air cannot get through a clogged filter or a dirty coil. Cooling drops, and the indoor coil can freeze.

  • A refrigerant leak

An air conditioner does not use up refrigerant. If it is low, there is a leak, and topping it up without fixing the leak only buys time.

  • Capacitor or contactor

These electrical parts start the outdoor unit. When one fails, the unit hums or clicks but does not run.

  • A frozen coil

Low airflow or low refrigerant can turn the indoor coil to ice. It has to thaw before we can find the real cause.

  • Clogged condensate drain

An air conditioner pulls water out of the air. When the drain clogs, it leaks, or a safety switch shuts the system off.

  • Thermostat

A wrong setting, dead batteries or loose wiring can look like a broken air conditioner.

How a repair visit works

  1. Tell us what is happening

Book online or call, and tell us what the air conditioner is doing.

  2. We find the cause

We test the indoor and outdoor units, the refrigerant and the airflow.

  3. You get the price first

You know what the repair costs before any work starts.

  4. Fixed and tested

We make the repair, run the system and check the air coming out of the vents before we leave.

AC repair questions

Should I keep running my air conditioner if it is blowing warm air?

No. Turn it off and call. Running it with a frozen coil, low refrigerant or a failing part can damage the compressor and turn a repair into a replacement.

Why is there ice on my air conditioner?

Ice usually means too little airflow, often from a dirty filter, or low refrigerant from a leak. Set the thermostat to Off and the fan to On to let it thaw, replace the filter if it is dirty, and call us if it freezes again.

Why is my air conditioner leaking water inside?

Most often the condensate drain is clogged, so water backs up and overflows. A frozen coil dripping as it thaws is the other common cause.

Is it worth repairing an older air conditioner?

It depends on its age, the repair and the refrigerant it uses. Many systems installed before 2010 use R-22, which is no longer made in the United States, so repairs that need refrigerant get expensive. Read repair or replace or see AC replacement.

Do you repair mini splits and heat pumps too?

Not cooling like it should?

Tell us what is going on. You get the price up front, and we show up on time.
